Initial Consultation...

Your engagement with CBT starts with an initial consultation to ensure that CBT is the right therapy for you and that you are completely comfortable with the proposed process.  You will be asked a series of questions about your life and background.  If you are anxious or depressed, you will be asked whether these issues interfere with your family, work and social life.  You will also be asked about events that may be related to your problems, treatments you have had, and what you would like to achieve through therapy.  If CBT is deemed an appropriate therapy, the therapist will let you know what to expect from a course of treatment.  If it is not appropriate, or you do not feel comfortable with it, alternative treatments may be recommended.  Your issues and needs will be analysed and an individualised formulation worksheet and functional analysis will be completed.  You will be given a copy of this to keep.

Ongoing Sessions...

Once you have completed the initial assessment we will start working together to break down your problems into their constituent parts (situations, thoughts, emotions, physical feelings & actions).  You may be asked to keep a diary of your thought and behaviour patterns to assist in this on-going process.  We will work together to analyse your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and come to a joint agreement as to whether they are unrealistic or unhelpful, allowing us to determine the effect they have on each other and on you.  We will then guide you on your journey to change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours.
